Rare hernias

Different types of hernias can occur at different other weak points of the abdominal wall. They are rare. We will simply mention them. We have described them in the French Encyclopedia of Surgery.

Spiegelian hernias are located a little bit higher than inguinal hernias. The diagnosis may be difficult, mainly when the hernia orifice is small. At the Hernia InstituteParis we usually perform laparoscopic repair.

Obturator hernias are very rare, they can protrude through a small orifice, located a little bit lower than the groin. They entail a high risk of strangulation.

Some other rare hernias can find a way through small clefts between the lumbar muscles or even between the gluteal muscles (at the buttocks) or the perineal muscles.
