Incisional hernias

Incisional hernias occur at the site of surgical incisions in the abdominal wall (laparotomy). They are due to the tearing of the closing suture of the primary operation. Incisional hernias are due to healing problems of tissues, linked to the patient medical condition, such as obesity, diabetes, chronic bronchitis or smoking, as well as to postoperative complications, such as vomiting, coughing or wound infection.

The treatment consists of closure of the orifice, which sometimes is very large, by a patch. The patch repair can be performed by open direct approach or by laparoscopic approach. We use both, depending mainly on the size of the hernia.
